Today’s Thursday Thirteen is brought to you by the letters W, I, and G, and the numbers 5 and 23.
I found these all in less than seven days. I swear, New Englanders have the most Vanity Plates per square mile.

- This guy is just “CREWZN.”

- I can only imagine this person is a self-styled “gangsta”. Though, in a Mazda? Probably not very credible.

- This must be a mother.

- I’ve been debating on if this person meant to spell “no duh” or they have no dad. Either way, it’s very sad.

- Obviously this person is clinging onto Boston’s glory. (You know they say that Maine is like Massachusetts’ retarded step-cousin, right? We have no teams of our own but we always seem to glob onto Mass’ victories.

- Blue Heaven or Haven?

- This was sitting next to the above car.

- Awwwwwww…as if college didn’t cost enough… (By the way, the MSU Mom really drives this SUV.)

- Here’s a two-fer. This car has been sitting in the parking garage for six months. People have written in the dust, as you can see. Obviously someone cared about it at one time…enough to get a vanity plate. I’m even betting the guy is tall, kind of pale, maybe a little bald.

- Apparently, the cost of college is worth a “W”.

- I don’t think this person is sticking around.

- And this one ain’t from around here.

- At least this one has the right idea about living life every day.

Well, I can hardly believe that in two weeks this time, I’ll be in England and on a tour, possibly viewing Stonehenge from behind some gated fence. I’m really started to get excited!
What’s really nifty is that PW is going to be doing all the tours and travelling with me from Monday through Thursday that week, including my overnight stay in Bath and the bus trip down to Glastonbury Abbey! So, I’ll actually get to spend some time with her while I’m there and she’ll actually get to do some touristy things that English doesn’t want to do because, well, he lives there and he’s done all that.
So, now I’m trying to hurry and make all kinds of reservations — yes, I waited to the last minute. I’ve got book my three day tours and my hotel in Bath. I’m just waiting to hear back from both tour agencies on questions. I booked a hotel in Edinburgh, which I’m iffy about but it’s done and it has a complimentary Scottish breakfast.
I haven’t even started looking at what I want to see in London the second week. Oy.

I found a couple of online checklists for travelers which appear to be pretty good and thought I’d share:
In the end, I ended up with this Travel Accessories All-In-One Adapter with Surge Protection thing for my laptop, which means I think that I can bring back the adaptors I bought at Radio Shack as it appears to do all of their functions too. You can as the link will reveal, find it at Amazon.com (and I’d be grateful if you’d buy it through that link), but I did find it hidden in the luggage section of Wal-Mart last night.
I bought two pairs of capris last night to wear on the trip and three tops that match the capris. After talking with PW, I’m planning on bringing those items, a pair of black dockers, a pair of blue jeans, one skirt, one cardigan, a couple of t-shirts, a set of PJs, the bridesmaid dress and my basic underwear and socks and necessary shoes (walking shoes, bridesmaid shoes, one pair of dress shoes). I kind of think that’s actually more than I’ll need. I’ll have access to PW’s washer and dryer, which apparently are tiny. She’s going to loan me a coat or “fleece” for when I go to Scotland. I refuse to wear shorts period. I might actually get away with one suitcase. I’ll have to see. The airline has weird measurement requirements.
Some other nifty things I bought to use on the trip are a Travelon ID and Boarding Pass Holder, EasyGo Neon Luggage Tags (set of 2) (since Delta ate my last set when they lost my luggage), a Rick Steves Silk Money Belt, a pair of neon luggage grips so I can find my luggage and my hands will be comfy dragging them through the airport, and Travel Space Bags (No Vacuum Needed! Set of 3).. Who knew you needed all of that stuff anyway? You need the money belt to protect yourself from the pickpockets and you need the luggage tags and the grips and the boarding pass stuff for obvious convenience reasons. It all adds up though. I better be going on this trip again.
I still need to confirm a sitter for the cats. The dress will be ready a week from tomorrow. Ug. So much to do. So much to do.

No, not that kind of world power…
O.K. First, I gotta thank Big Dog. Last night I checked my HP power adapter that came with the laptop and it does read 110-220, so I’m good there. I don’t need a power converter, just a plug adapter since it’s a 3-prong.
Now, I’m trying to decide if I want to invest in the
Kensington 33117 International Plug Adapter but Meg and Peter seem to be recommending this EuroSurge Volt Surge Protector
from Voltage Valet. Meg says I should be able to get it at an Electronic Boutique or something at the mall. I’ll have to check, I guess. If I only need the plug adapter, the later is the better choice, I think. I wish I could find something suitable at Amazon.com or BestBuy or even Radio Shack. Why does this have to be so difficult? Why can’t there be a simple guide somewhere that’s easy to Google?
Anyway, I also have to thank SQ for sending me a link she found useful when she went to Austrailia last year on vacation: World Electric Guide — its a table that summarizes information on the electrical systems used in most countries around the world, including which adaptors you’re going to need, the voltage, and frequency. There’s also some notes on where which plugs are more prevailant. There are also links on the website to useful things like mobile phones on world travel and International dialing codes.

Me to HP tech support: I’m going on a trip in a few weeks to the UK and I would like to be sure that when I go that I have the correct equipment to be able to plug in my HP laptop while I’m there. Is the current power supply that came with the notebook enough or do I need to purchase some converter?
Tech Support (with Indian accent): So is the problem that when you turn it on, you are not seeing anything at all?
I’m not making this up. This is exactly how the conversation went with the HP tech support. I still do not know what I need to do to use my HP Pavillion safely while in the UK at the end of the month. I tried searching their website. I was at one point told I could buy at travel kit for some $200 but no one could tell me what it would do for me — and besides, that was out of stock anyway.
Eventually I hung up while on hold for over 20 minutes after being on the phone for over an hour — 20 minutes of that was spent trying to wade through their phone system to find a human being on the other end.
All that means is now I still have to call back and do it all over again.

This is getting kind of frustrating. I really thought there’d be a lot more advice on the net about packing for trips to England and what to take and what not to take. Maybe I’m just not using the right search strings. So far this looks like the only semi-good site:
Some ideas on how to pack for your European Vacation
Basically, I’ve figured out that I need to go get a new raincoat (mine’s too small), some more shorts (same issue), some luggage tags (Delta ate the ones I had), and some sort of plug for my laptop. I’ve ordered “the magic bra” and the bridesmaid dress and I need to review the black flats in my closet and if none of them are suitable for a wedding, I need to go buy a new pair. Then I need to start making a pile of what’s going in the suitcase.
OMG. I’m already getting a migraine thinking about the 12 hours on the plane.

Peter and Meg have set the date for June 30th. If I understand their plan, they are using their honeymoon as an excuse to go to PW’s wedding in England. Meg indicated that it was the only way they could afford to go to PW’s wedding and get married this year as well.
Unfortunately, because I’ve already bought my tickets to leave for London on June 23rd, I won’t be able to go to both weddings. However, I’ll probably be able to do some sightseeing with them in London. Meg indicated that they planned to spend a few days alone but suggested joint sightseeing, which I’m glad for. I don’t know that I’d want to be the third wheel on a honeymoon.
As it is, I’m considering staying in a hotel my last two nights in London to give PW and English some time alone after their wedding and in case they actually go out of town for a honeymoon.
I’m a little worried about El being in London for PW’s wedding. Meg indicated that she’d probably go and I’ve always said that I doubted she’d waste this excuse to go to London, but I also remember how she was at the last wedding. Granted she was much more likely to mood swing back then and she was having some sort of personal crisis about her fiance. However, she also tried to put the moves on the groom and also had some sort of drama moment at the reception about how she was never getting married and how we all pittied her. I’m a little worried that two weddings of friends so close together might send her over the edge — particularly since PW is marrying a rich Brit which is about 2/3rds of what El would like in a man.
You know, being away from home is going to be stressful enough. I really don’t want to be drenched in the old drama. Oy.

I appologize for seemingly abandoning this blog. The truth is that I’ve been distracted by more than a few things in my life:
- My grandmother’s death, as you know, took me somewhat by surprise and has caused me to do a lot of self-inspecting. Plus, I want to be there for my mother who I think took it a lot harder than me. Plus, the planning for the memorial service the weekend before Valentine’s Day in Florida.
