The Real Post-Christmas Question On Everyone’s Mind

Posted in My Life, Little Red House by n. mallory

“How am I going to get the tree down into the basement without taking the lights off or taking it apart?”

Or is that just me?

Seriously, it’s been on my mind since I pulled the tree out of the box and strung those lights this year. This is the first year I’ve had a basement to store it in rather than a niche hidden by a hanging sheet in my bedroom corner. If I could figure out how to get it back down in the basement without damaging the paint on my walls or killing myself on the basement steps, I’d be one of those crazy people.

I considered that obviously those doors going from the backyard to the basement are twice as big and the steps are fewer, but I’d still have to get it outside, wouldn’t I? If I took it out of the front door, there’d just be one door, but I’d have to take it around the house. If I take it out the back door, well, there’s two doors, a doorway, the kitchen and the dining room to contend with. I wish they’d just invent a transporter already.
I did know a family growing up that had their tree up all year long in the living room…but then, we didn’t think too highly of them.

Of course, I dated both the boys.

The Great Tofurky Experiment

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Fibromyalgia by n. mallory

So, the nutritionists say the poultry is a bad thing for me because it’s pro-inflammatory. They told me to eat more soy and seafood. Seafood didn’t seem right for Christmas dinner, but there’s something in the health food stores called “Tofurky.” It’s kind of fun to say but I was a little wary of trying it. Feaux vegetarian meats have been a kind of scary thing, though they’ve been getting better the last 15 years as “vegetarianism” has hit the modern grocery store instead of just in hidden health food stores.

Anyway, so this Christmas, I decided to go for the whole Tofurky affair. I found a whole dinner at Wild Oats. According to the box:

A Delicious Vegetarian Feast

Feast Includes a Tender, Juicy Stuffed Tofu Roast, 8 Delicious Cranberry-Apple, Potato Dumplings, Rich Tofurky “Giblet” & Mushroom Gravy, and Our Signature Tofurky Jurky Wishstix

Peppermint Candy Canes

Posted in My Life by n. mallory

Does anyone make them anymore? I’ve been to three stores looking for them but all I’ve found is fruity-flavored ones — Lifesavers, Jelly Bellys, Starburst, Jolly Ranchers; Cherry is the flavor of “The Original Candy Cane” apparently.

This is just wrong.

Quote of the Day: On Christmas Eve

Posted in Quote of the Day by n. mallory

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

Discombobulated Thoughts — 12/22/06

  • I’m feeling incredibly grumpy today.
  • I don’t have any clue why so don’t ask.
  • Apparently my GP was supposed to order some follow-up lab work after the ER visit.
  • Obviously they didn’t.
  • I have way too much to do around the house and I just haven’t been doing any of it.
  • I picked up a “Tofurkey Feast” dinner for 8 at Wild Oats for Christmas Dinner.
  • I can’t decide if I’m excited about it or not.
  • Though “Tofurkey” is kind of fun to say and my dog looks at me funny when I say it.
  • I keep forgetting I have fresh raspberries in the fridge.
  • Pugly was not happy about wearing his Christmas hat to doggy daycare this morning.
  • I’m very sad that PW hasn’t returned my emails.
  • I’ve been feeling particularly lonely lately.
  • It’s probably just the holidays.

(I apologize if some of the pictures are a little dark. I tried to use natural light because the flash washed them out. I’m much better at taking landscape photographs.)

Is This Tacky Or Am I Just Too Judgemental?

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

My uncle sent an email to everyone in the family and all of his friends (I assume) — a gazillion email addresses in the “to” and “cc” parts of the email header.  The email basically said that it was their Christmas card for the year and attached were some photos.  The photos were family photos and some pictures of the giant inflatable Santa and Snowman he’d bought for the house.

He then said that if anyone wanted a real card to email him and he’d send them one.

Apparently there were a few individual comments because the next day we got a second email indicating that “people” had “complained” about a lack of holiday letter.  So he was including the holiday letter in that email.

I know I’m fairly rare because I send out less than 20 cards a year.  I’m selective about it and rather than a holiday letter, I usually pick out a favorite recipe to tuck in with my cards — no one really wants me to rehash what’s been going on in a formal letter.

And the year I lost my job on December 12th, I didn’t send cards because, well, I was a bit depressed.

My general feeling is that a lot of people go way too overboard with the whole card-exchange and the holiday letter thing — there’s no way that everyone’s child is a genius, who are we kidding?  And, seriously?  I didn’t need to know that my 19-year-old unemployed cousin has a black Porsche — though I’d like to know if she got it before or after she finally decided to start college in January.
However,  I’m of the mind that sending an email to everyone you know with a few digital pictures attached is not very holiday-like and is kind of tacky.  You can do that anytime.  Why call it a Christmas card?  Especially since those pictures look remarkably like the pictures he mailed around shortly before Thanksgiving.

And I keep thinking, that this is supposed to be the “wealthy” side of the family.  You know, they live in the affluent neighborhood, their kid drives a Porsche, they have a big house and neat gadgets, and catered holiday meals…and they can’t go to WAL-Mart like everyone else and spend the money on a box of non-descript Christmas cards?  Heck, you don’t even have to label them yourself any more.  The computer will print your address book to labels.  All you have to do is sign your Christmas letter and stuff it in.

Then again, maybe this goes back to the thought and counting again.  It just seems to me that so few people do so little thinking these days.
