…and so does the writer’s block.
*sigh*
First person or third?
I’ve decided to write about my experience of having gone from Computer Diva to fired to leaving everything I knew in New Orleans and moving to Maine to work and experiencing my first Fall and my first Winter and my first snow-in and on and on.
But should I start before “the firing” so the world can see what a snotty Computer Diva I was, at “the firing” where in disbelieving numbness I fell from my self-built pedestal, or after deciding to go to Maine?
Should I not write about this subject? In

- nano
- Extremely small
- Short for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)
So, I’ve been thinking on this whole need-a-plot idea for Nano. Obviously I didn’t do well last year. I got stuck on the first scene and just couldn’t get going and quite frankly I don’t want to do that again this year. Duh.
Anyway, believe it or not, my shrink gave me an idea. She suggested that since I do have a sense of humor (I know not everyone out there actually thinks so. :p) that I should write what I know. I know

Cross-posted at Nano Maine, Maine’s NaNoWriMo Blog.
O.K. I’m in.
I think.
I tried Nano last year and didn’t get very far. I seem to suffer perpetually from writer’s block. I’m sure there’s some psychological explanation like I’m afraid of imperfection and afraid of people mocking my art and I’m lazy.
Really, I just felt overwhelmed, like I do know, and a little desperate for an idea for a plot that goes more than one sentence. Heh.
So, I’ve got a couple of tentative ideas.
I could write a space western-type thing; maybe fanfic for Firefly/Serenity. I think fanfic still fits in the

Through a thread on NaNoWriMo’s forums, I found some nifty websites for character creation and design and thought I’d share.
Fiction Writer’s Character Chart — This is a PDF file that someone was nice enough to upload and share. The original html version is here. I really like this one a lot and am going to try it out this weekend.
The Scriptorium has a whole toolbox of writing but here’s a brief sketch worksheet and here’s a more detailed “biography” worksheet.
This one was created for the purpose of designing characters for roleplaying

This is Izzy’s introductory post in the PBeM I joined.
Who: Izzy
Where: cockpit of the Tianlong
She’d crashed once. During the war.
That had been an unpleasant experience to say the least. Her fighter had taken an unlucky hit that had knocked out part of her propulsion system and she’d been sent spinning toward the unwelcoming view of a mountainside.
This was worse.
Cold fingers touched her forehead and came away with a sticky, wet substance. Green eyes tried to focus but it occurred to her that there was nothing to focus on. Not when her eyes were closed. Slowly,

I wrote the following to be a writing sample for an audition for a Firefly PBeM game. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve had to audition for a game. Usually I go on reputation because I usually know someone. Izzy is an original character, an ex-ace fighter pilot with a history with both the Alliance and the Independents which left her liking neither.
Izzy pulled her Stetson down low over her brow as she settled into the back corner of the hole in the wall bar. The bottle of whiskey sat on the unfinished table

Here’s the Friday First Five Sentences from me this week:

Continuing The Friday Five First Sentences exercise:
Today it was really tough getting inspired.

My Journey
by N. Mallory
I had a desire to see the world,
So I carefully mapped out my route,
keeping every path in mind
I noted the sites and cities I wanted to visit
and studied the roads I wanted to take
And I began.
But some roads were closed,
and some sites gone,
and some cities became unreachable.
So I saw other sites,
visited other cities,
traveled other roads.
And I do not regret the detours,
because I chose the direction
and the journey was mine.

O.K. This is getting harder…here’s my five for this week.
July 29th, 2005
A long time ago, in a city far far away, I had a writing circle where I encouraged the group to write five sentences that could be the first sentences of a story or novel. The intent is to draw readers in, to make them want to know more. The first sentence of short stories and novels and articles should grab the read and make them unable to close the book and toss it away.
So, I’m going to start trying to do this once a week on Fridays from now on to get myself back into the groove

I’m feeling kind of odd this morning. Last night I admitted to myself and SuzyQ something I hadn’t wanted to admit but had been feeling for some time. Perhaps I’ve been on the verge of this for a while.
I started playing roleplaying games late in my life in 1994. They have been a big part of my life — the creativity, the escapism, the socialness of it all. I’ve been both player and GM and I’ve both enjoyed and hated both at times. I started Play-by-email games not long after I guess. It’s sort

When I was little, I was always making up stories in my head. I’d have conversations between characters in there. Sometimes I’d even act out scenes. Sometimes Barbies were involved, I believe.
I also played with the girl next store and we would re-enact movies we loved or pretend to be cartoon or t.v. characters and play in her backyard or my living room. I sort of outgrew that foolishness, but I did turn several of my creative musings that came from this into short stories and one really bad novel in high school.
In college, I
