The $1500.00 Dog Biscuit

Posted in My Life, Soap Box by n. mallory | .

This is the type of dog treat that made Wookie so sick. IAMS tartar treats are allegedly 100% edible and digestible. And… supposedly, they are also hard enough that they won’t break into chunks large enough to disrupt digestion.

The treats puff up when they get wet, so Wookie had two 1″ x 1.5″ pieces, floating around (chewed - but undigested) in his stomach for nine days. The pieces resembled wet particle board. The “treat” caused him diarrhea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. He lost over 10% of his body weight in a week and is still an inpatient at Virginia Tech’s teaching hospital.

So far, we’ve spent $1500.00 and made seven vet visits. (and even now… we’re not 100% sure he’s OK)

If you have dogs… please think twice about giving them these treats. It just isn’t worth the risk.

This is just another example of why you have to be so careful of what you feed your pets. I told letskyce yesterday that this just stiffens my resolve to spend the weekend making homemade pet treats.

I bought a book on Amazon on making homemade pet food that is really great - a good mix of everyday recipes and “treats”. I’m pitching the Alpo biscuits!

    Which book did you buy?

I’m considering trying a mix of 3oz meat, 1/4c. broth, 1/3c. grain, and 1/3c. veggie. for Pugly and then fiddling with it from there.

I like the idea of a couple of tablespoons of yogurt with a slice of apple or a slice of cheese as an occasional snack too.

    Hi,
I recently got one of these treats for free and fed it to my puppy, not knowing it wasn’t for puppies.
But the next morning he had diarrhea and vominting, it has been 3 days now and he is still weak and puking.
anyone thinking of giving this treat to their dog should not do it! it is a terrible treat.
