Thursday Thirteen Things Most People Don’t Know About Me (#12)
I moved to Maine 2 1/2 years ago, leaving my old life behind. Most people up here and most people online don’t know many of these things from the first 33 years of my life…
![]() |
- I was a Stand-up comic in New Orleans for about 2 years after college. I loved it at first, but it’s very hard to be a clean comic and the guy who booked our shows kept booking us into the sleaziest of places.
- I lost 55 lbs in 2002. I’ve gained it back since moving, but I was well-known in certain circles in New Orleans as being the Queen of Nutrition and was a role model, something I was proud of but also there was a lot of pressure with it.
- I’ve written two novels. One I wrote in high school and one I wrote last year for NaNoWriMo. Believe it or not but the latter is the better of the two. The high school one was really bad sci-fi. Last year’s was semi-autobiographical. No one will ever see either again.
- I haven’t been on a date since the beginning of 2003. Possibly why my mother thinks I’m a lesbian.
- I am still good friends with my last three serious boyfriends. Like help move a body good friends. Though, I think only one of them might actually ask.
- I was once mugged on a first date. We were in the driveway of a police officer’s home. The mugger told us not to call the police. We were standing next to the patrol car.
- He’s the only one I considered marrying.
- I have seen and talked to ghosts, but I don’t believe in extra-terrestrials. However, Signs scares the shit out of me every time I watch it.
- I was sent home from Vacation Bible School for wearing a skirt to short. I was the art teacher.
- I also got girls banned from the Church choir my senior year because I “danced” while singing.
- I was on the Student Council for the Baptist Student Center in college. I know this comes as a surprise to those who know I have trouble with the Church. Believe it or not, I did try to work with the system for many years before my Faith in God suggested I should stop upsetting the natives with my questions.
- I sold Pampered Chef products — and despite having quite the comic personality for it, I hated hunting down friends and family with a catalog and calculator to beg them to buy stuff. However, I have quite the enviable kitchen collection of stoneware and pots and pans.
- After I lost my job 12 days before Christmas 2003 in New Orleans, I took a job in Maine in April 2004 and moved 1700 miles away from everyone and everything I’d known my entire life of 33 years. Some people have told my I was courageous. At the time I considered it desperate. Today, I consider myself lucky. It’s clear to me that God knew it was time for me make a change and that I wasn’t going to do it on my own. He knew I would never have mentally survived Hurricane Katrina and that as a Healthcare IT worker I would have been in the midst of it per my job’s requirements. Everything might not be perfect, but it could be worse; that much I’m aware.

I think you were courageous too. It’s a massive step to move far away, and it sounds like your making the most of it. I mean, how many people want a big change in their life, but never follow through?
I left a perfectly good job with an airline 15 years ago to go back to Louisiana and to collge again (La Tech). When I was saying goodbye to my coworkers, they were incredulous. In my six+ years with Delta, I had known exactly two people out of literally thousands who had left the company because they wanted to. At the time, Delta was doing great, and my friends thought I was nuts. Now Delta is a hair away from folding, and what friends I still keep up with, say it’s not a very fun place to work anymore. You have to follow your heart, regardless of what the intellect says.
Good luck!

Sorry about visiting last week’s T13. I was scrolling through the list on the T13 site and I went too far down!!! I guess I wasn’t paying close attention.
I loved this list. A stand up comic huh??? Very interesting!
Thanks for visiting.

OMG…this is too, too freaky! This is my exact topic this week, and even though I posted an hour after you, I promise this is the first time I’ve even opened bloglines today!!!
The even scarier thing is your #8 and #11 are similar (very) to my #13 and #4!
Well, I’ve had my eerie, wierd feeling for the day! lol
The mugging incident is too hilarious!
I believe everything happens for a reason and works together for good…I’m glad your move was for the good (and that you’ve been able to find the goodin it).

Snort out loud on #4! Why is it that when you’re a single woman over a certain age, and you’re not dating anyone that moves, people start thinking you no longer like men?
I’m working on it, but it’s a challenge.

Glad to know the move worked out for you. God works in mysterious ways!
On the PC stuff, I totally hear ya. My aunt sold PC for a while and my mom and I actually groaned audibly when she called us for a party.

Ghosts scare the crap out of me…I’m always having dreams there is a ghost in my son’s room and she’s standing over his crib watching him. She never really does anything…but it still scares the crap out of me. I wake up in a panic and run to check on him.
I’m glad you now know the name of the book you were looking for ~ I LOVE Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs…really one of my absolute faves!
Happy Thursday!

One of these days I’ll actually get around to writing a novel. Maybe when I get my desk clean and organized.

What a great list! You are a courageous woman in my book. Moving is such a challenge! And to move to Maine from Louisiana had to have been an enourmous culture-shock!
Good for you!

Great list. I’ve started NaNoWriMo this month, but life is getting in the way of my daily 1667. I’ve written maybe 1100 words? LOL
RE: Religion. I’m actually quite a devote Mormon, so my faith in God and Christ is very strong, but I have been a bad fit for religion all my life. I can relate with much of what you write about. The narrowminded sheep that seem to occupy positions of authority in strict religions don’t like non-conformists. They don’t like free thinkers. They certainly don’t like me. Good thing for me their opinions don’t matter much in the Cosmic Scheme of things.
My Thursday Thirteen
(BTW, the Yahoo Web2.0 pop up on this site is driving me mad. It won’t go away…)

D Cootey - Hmmmm…not sure why that’s happening. I added a space in the script. Hopefully that’ll fix it.
There’s not supposed to be pop-ups on this website. I don’t have any programmed here.

I relocated in 2002, from the Pacific Northwest to my current location. I was most unthrilled. (OTOH, I found out I can pack up everything I own in four days. Not sure how that skill will come in useful…but there it is.)
Signs…yeah. That Mel Gibson definitely is a scary sight. Yet another Culkin child - even more unsettling. (Vous, sarcastic, moi?)

I am so sorry your innards are giving you fits! It takes time to track these things down and it’s very frustrating. I’ll say an extra prayer! I love the movie Signs; the script wasn’t brilliant but I love Juaquin Phoenix in this role. And I definately think you should write more. Love your voice, your world view and your take on things!

this was very interesting. We know people who did escape–with their dogs, 3 days of clothes and car, but starting over in another state was hard. Your kitchen cupboards must be a real joy.
My TT is up.

Moving cross country is always hard - especially if you’re moving somewhere you’ve never spent any significant time at and don’t have any family there. I know how upsetting it can be at first and how amazing finding a new place where you seem to “fit” can be. I hope you continue to be lucky in Maine.

I’m a little late making my TT rounds. Hey, you live in Portland?!?! I’m near there, sometimes visit the city for tax-free shopping. Anyhow, how interesting you were a stand-up comic! Our lives often do take us to places for a reason, don’t they, only we don’t know until after the fact the reason(s) why.

Oops! You live in the other Portland. Darn it all for having duplicate major city names! I’m so confused!
