You Can Take The Girl Out Of New Orleans, But…

Posted in My Life, Little Red House by n. mallory | .

So yesterday I was applying for homeowner’s insurance. That’s one of the ga-billion things you have to do when you are trying to buy a house. You have to know all kinds of interesting details like the year your house was built — 1960, the square footage of the living area, which doesn’t include the unfinished basement — 1536 sq. ft., not the 1600 sq. ft. advertised by the way, where the nearest fire hydrant is — 10 ft. from my driveway, which is reassuring, how many sinks are in the bathroom — 1, what kind of wiring is in the house — that one was multiple choice thank goodness.

Anyway, eventually you get to questions about what kind of coverage you want. After my friend’s house burned down back in early 2005, I totally went for the extra rebuilding coverage. Fire has always been one of by biggest fears. When she was asking about insuring jewelry, I’m sorry to say that I didn’t need extra coverage for any…as I told her, I don’t think I even own a watch right now.

When she asked if I wanted flood coverage…apparently flood coverage is an option here in Maine. Huh. She didn’t even get the whole question out. I blurted out, “Hell, yeah! I’m from New Orleans!”

That’s really all I needed to say. You can take the girl out of New Orleans, but you can’t take the New Orleans out of the smart girl.

I’m up the road near Baton Rouge. Our parish is just about all flood zone.

But, they built the houses to where it was right out of the flood zone.

Luckily, water has never come up — yet — to where we would ever need the flood insurance. But, we did make a hail/wind damage claim on Katrina!

    Thanks for the visit!
