Getting From Here To There: What’s In Your Flight Kit?
Coincidentally peskyapostrophe is planning an international vacation of her own this year and she happened to post today about what she takes with her on the airplane. She had some things on her list I hadn’t thought about taking with me.
The idea of a flight kit is to put in not just what you are going to need like any medicines you might need to take during the journey but also what things you are going to need to keep you sane on the journey. For example, I can’t make it through a flight without music and if my iPod runs out of juice prior to landing, I’m just a little screwed. ;) Heck, I’ve been known to try to charge my iPod from my laptop battery on the plane in the air… And, yes, that was probably me sitting next to the oddly placed outlet in the airport with my palm and my cell phone plugged in but only if I was actually talking on the cell phone at the time….otherwise I’d have had the laptop plugged in.
I’ve been putting together my own “flight kit” as I’ve been packing the last few days and here’s what I’m planning on taking:
- my laptop with some dvds and some game cds
- my iPod mini, fully charged
my Palm Z22 (sadly, you can only play backgammon so long before it’ll die…)- a few Women’s Day magazines I’ve been saving
- 1 or 2 books
- soy nuts, Twizzlers, a bottle of diet soda
- my toothbrush & toothpaste (thanks to peskyapostrophe)
- eye drops
- squishy travel pillow I bought at Brookstone in the Atlanta airport
- my medications (thanks to Delta almost losing my luggage between Boston and El Paso that time)
So, here’s the question…what do you put in your flight kit? What helps get you from here to there?

Yep, always take my meds and my skin care/makeup in the carry-on. Anything that would be a pain to replace. A couple changes of underwear. Books and magazines, of course, as well as water and snacks.
But “toothbrush & toothpaste”? peskyapostrophe is a GENIUS!!!

Just checked peskyapostrophe’s site and it reminded me — I have been taking Airborne on flights, too. And now I’m eager to buy the Evian mist. What a treat!
When do you depart, Friday? Eeeee!

Friday…I’m already starting to feel sick and impatient and achy. God, I hate travelling. I like being other places, it’s the riding and it’s the waiting in the airports and the bus stations. Plus, there’s the pain associatiated with it. I’ve been dreading that for several weeks.
If I could just recline the whole way. I really think that would completely make the difference.

I got the idea from my trip to London about six years ago when I flew Virgin air - they put a toothbrush and toothpaste in their little goody bag and it totally made me feel human after a long flight. Now I always take both with me when I travel.

My kit usually contains what I need for a night in a hotel though they usually provide comps if you are out of something. This is helpful when a flight is cancelled and you have to be put up for a night because your baggage does not go with you.
Noise reducing headphones. Ear plugs in case I am sitting near an engine. Extra hearing aid batteries.(I don’t suppose that you need those). If you wear glasses take an extra pair. If you wear contacts, take your glasses as backup.
A pen (or sharpened pencil) and notebook. They are handy if you need to jot something down and a pen (or sharpened pencil) make good weapons in the event you need one. The stylus for your palm would make a good weapon as well. I take no meds so that is moot but if you do, carry them in the original container or you might be suspected of trafficking drugs (sounds crazy but it happens).

This is kind of funny because I was trying to decide if I really wanted to bring my vitamins in the jumbo containers they sell them in these days and was talking to a friend about it. I considered counting out just enough into sandwhich bags and labeling them and putting them into my suitcase but then my friend and I had this image of me causing an international incident — with my kind of luck — over my Vitamin C and B-12.
When I travel on the plane, I do carry all of my meds in their original containers. However, I do it in case of a medical emergency so that if a doctor has to treat me for something, he knows what I’m taking. I hadn’t thought about the whole drug trafficking thing.
