Things My Parents Never Taught Me

Posted in My Life by n. mallory | .

So, really there ought to be a book or something out there that kind of gives little helpful hints to people like me on what to do — well, for everything.  There seems to be a lot of little things I don’t know how to do that most people seem to maybe have picked up somewhere else along the way.

For example, did you know that when using a drill to screw a screw into a wall, you first need to use a bit to drill a hole smaller than the screw where you want the screw to be?  I did actually know that you should do this on a wall stud and I do actually own a stud finder — much to my surprise, though the wall stud is apparently not as thick as I expected it to be.  Anyway, once a nice home improvement-minded co-worker explained to me about the bit and the small hole, I kind of got the hang of it and now one of the three shelves that needs to be hung in my utility closet is actually hung.  It even looks level — I can’t seem to find my level at the moment.

When I was adding the shelf to the utility closet, I happened to discover that the hose to the washing mashine was leaking.  Since a nice manly man had installed the washer, I had no clue about how to turn the water off, how to remove the hoses, if they sold them at Wal-mart, etc.  By the way, apparently there is something wrong with the water spicket for my washer as it doesn’t turn all the way off.  So there I was trapped between the wall and the washer, standing in an inch of water, getting sprayed with friggin’ cold water and yelling at Aloof and Pugly not to come back there, trying to use the pliers to get the old hose off so I could get the new hose, which you can buy at Wal-mart, on.  By the way, I did it without any help.

Oh, an you can now buy clear duct tape I discovered.

So tonight I’m going to attempt to install the other two shelves and if that works, I have this rack of hooks for hanging clothes behind my bedroom door.

I think someone should pet my head and give me a human treat or something.

I know, it’s amazing how much stuff we have to figure out on our own. My hub isn’t exactly equipped with all the requisite knowledge, either! And the pets, they really just want to disrupt the proceedings.

Good job on the shelves and the washer hose, yay!
