What I’ve Learned Since My Puppy Came Home

Posted in My Life, The Puppy by n. mallory | .

I admit I’ve been too busy with the new puppy to post. Mostly I’ve been running around saying, “Piddle on the paper!” and “Don’t chew that!” and “No!” O.K. There’s been lots of picture taking too and lots of hugs and kisses and a lot of learning curve.

puglyFor example, I’ve learned that puppies can get car sick and they will eat anything, including the bottom of your chips bag. I’ve learned that they think it’s playtime if you get up at 3am to pee. I’ve learned that my cats really don’t like Pugly yet. I’ve learned that crate training is much harder on me than it is on him. I’ve learned that insomnia is a good thing when you have to get up four times a night to make sure the puppy doesn’t pee in the bed. I’ve learned that stairs are more interesting to attack than learning to climb and wires are apparently facinating to gnaw on. I’ve learned that the bathmat is apparently far more interesting in the hallway — Pugly is going to be an interior designer when he grows up. I’ve learned that puppy teeth are sharp. I’ve learned that I let the personal organizer throw away way too many of those old towels. I’ve learned that carpet is much better for peeing on that training pads and there isn’t enough Resolve in the world. I’ve learned that you can indeed sleep without a mattress pad, especially after the one you have has been wetted by something small and furry. I’ve learned that Pug puppies eat and run and play and snort in their sleep and they run in circles when they are sniffing out a good place to piddle.

Best of all, I’ve learned that Pug puppies are wiggly balls of energy that want to be with you every second of the day and want to kiss and snuggle and follow and play and no matter what happened five minutes ago, that’s still true.

Yeah, we’re (re)learning a lot of those same things with the kittens, although they are well-litter-trained. But the chewing of cords, the sharpness of teeth, the amazing things they think are playthings, all that. Whew.

I’m sure the cats and dog will come to like, if not love, each other. Sounds like he’s keeping you busy, anyway!

Puppies are sure a mixed blessing. Cute though. Once you have him trained, he’ll be a watch dog, playmate, company, bed warmer, etc etc… I love my dog, even though he’s now a year and a half old and entering that adolecent, “I don’t have to listen to you” phase. I think real “puppy” hood is easier by far than this. :>

OK Last night he threw a temper tantrum. No, really. It was a real, honest to God temper tantrum. Turned his back on me, pouted, sulked, didn’t want to be petted or touched — all because I did not want him crawling on my head while I was trying to go to sleep.

    Very odd.

And I felt so bad about leaving him in that small pet carrier that everyone said was fine that I went out and bought a bigger, more open crate yesterday. He was still whining and crying when I left today. We should be allowed to bring our puppies to work.
