Tale Of The Tell-Tale Quack

Posted in My Life, The Puppy by n. mallory

O.K. So Pugly had this toy duck.  You couldn’t touch the thing without it making a distinctive “quack quack quack quack” sound.  And no, that didn’t bother me.

What bothered me was that we went through two of them in fairly short order, such was his love of this plush toy duck.

First, the wings would be viciously pulled off.  Then then neck would be ripped open.  Then there would be stuffing everywhere.  Then Pugly would eat the stuffing.  Generally, the duck seemed to meet its end when my parents were around, by the way.  I guess they just encourage him to

From Within The House

Posted in My Life, Little Red House by n. mallory

I’m totally freaked out this morning.

Last night, on one of my gazillion trips downstairs to pee, I was sitting on the toilet (too much info?), when I heard the oddest, distinct sound of a phone off the hook.

O.K. Well, the cats do have night wanderings.  One of them could have possibly knocked one of the phones off the hook, right?

So, when I’m finished with my personal business, I go to the only phone in the house that isn’t connected to the world by a button.  It’s sitting securely in it’s cradle.  The only other phone in the house is one

Is This Tacky Or Am I Just Too Judgemental?

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

My uncle sent an email to everyone in the family and all of his friends (I assume) — a gazillion email addresses in the “to” and “cc” parts of the email header.  The email basically said that it was their Christmas card for the year and attached were some photos.  The photos were family photos and some pictures of the giant inflatable Santa and Snowman he’d bought for the house.

He then said that if anyone wanted a real card to email him and he’d send them one.

Apparently there were a few individual comments because the next day we got a

Quote of the Day: On Believing In Oneself

Posted in Quote of the Day by n. mallory

Too often we are scared. scared of what we might not be able to do. Scared of what people might think if we tried. We let our fears get in the way of our hopes. We say no when we mean to say yes. We sit quietly when we want to scream. And we shout with others when we should keep our mouths shut. Why? After all, we do only go around once. There’s really no time to be afraid. So stop. Try something you’ve never tried. Risk it…you have nothing to lose and everything, everything, everything to gain

There’s a odd possibility that the writer for B.C. might read my blog. Do you think?

There’s Always One Christmas Smart Ass

Posted in Soap Box by n. mallory

I used to think those games you play at office Christmas parties were pretty fun. You know the ones, right? Everyone buys a gift under a certain amount of money and then there’s a swapping type game. Some people call it Yankee Swap, White Elephant, Santa Swap, Rob Your Neighbor, Grinch Exchange, etc., etc.

I’ve never played it the same way twice either. The rules are constantly changing as far as how you can steal a present, whether it’s before or after you’ve picked a gift from the pile, how many times a present can be stolen

Quote of the Day: On Life’s Prizes

Posted in Quote of the Day by n. mallory

Most of us miss out on life’s big prizes. The Pulitzer. The Nobel. Oscars. Tonys. Emmys. But we’re all eligible for life’s small pleasures. A pat on the back. A kiss behind the ear. A four-pound bass. A full moon. An empty parking space. A crackling fire. A great meal. A glorious sunset. Hot soup. Cold beer.

Snow Day @ The Little Red House

Posted in My Life, Photo Blogging, Little Red House by n. mallory

As promised here are some pictures of today’s snow fall around my new house.

Here’s the Little Red House.  I wonder if someone can Photoshop those powerlines out so that can be made into a Christmas card or is the shot too blurry, do you think?

Yellow Snow

Posted in My Life, The Puppy, Little Red House by n. mallory

Those of us in the Little Red House woke up this morning to discover that a blanket of snow had covered our yard overnight.  (Pictures to follow tonight when I get home.)  How we discovered it is that I woke up to take little Pugly out for his morning pee-pee, put my Crocs and coat on and led him on the leash to the backdoor, which when opened revealed a great white cold from the back steps to the pine trees.

I blinked.

Pugly blinked and took a few tentative steps onto the snow covered stoop.

You must recall that little Pugly was

Gastroparesis

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Acid Reflux/Gastro B.S. by n. mallory

Sounds a bit ghastly, doesn’t it?

Gastroparesis is the diagnosis resulting from that stomach-emptying test I had last week.  You know, the one where I ate the radioactive eggs all the while they were talking about how the Russian spy was poisoned with radioactive sushi?

Anyway, turns out that in 90 minutes, those eggs were supposed to be at least half gone from my stomach, but they were only a quarter gone.  They were just hanging out in there like everything else does.  I just don’t understand why I’m not losing weight since I eat slow and everything digests slow.

Pet Peeve #3,129: Restrictive Comments

I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to read an interesting blog entry and want to comment or join in an on-going comment discussion only to find that you can only comment if you have a Blogger, Google, or Yahoo 360° account. (The worst ones are even more obscure or require registration with the website.)

The absolute last thing I want to do is sign up yet another account where I’m going to have to remember yet another sign-on name and password — because likely my usual sign-on has already been taken and it’s not a good idea to

Thursday Thirteen Famous Movies I’ve Happily Never Seen (#15)

Feel free to try to convince me to change my mind.

Thirteen Things about N. Mallory
  1. Gone with the WindGone With The Wind — Though I did read the book. I absolutely couldn’t stand Scarlett or Ashley. I did love Rhett Butler, of course, the rogue. Still, I’m not sitting through a technocolor movie of the story.
  2. Pulp Fiction — Gratuitous violence. Well, I think that’s what it is. That’s what it seems to be from the descriptions I’ve garnered from my male friends who’ve seen it and the commercials. It just seems to glorify violence and after seeing Natural Born Killers in the theater, I can’t stomach that kind of glorification anymore. Read the rest of this entry »

How In A Hurry Are You?

Posted in Soap Box by n. mallory

Since moving to a location that necessitates the use of the Turnpike and therefore paying for the Turnpike twice a day, I have discovered just how much in a hurry other drivers appear to be.  Some are far more excited about getting to work or school in the morning than I am, I guess, and it doesn’t seem to matter if I’m at the exact change toll booth at 7:30am or 8:15am.  There is always someone a car or two behind me so entirely anxious to get to work that they cannot wait for me to put my exact change
