The Conspiracy Superstition

One of the theories as to where the superstition of Friday the 13th being an unlucky day came from goes back to Friday, October 13, 1307.

But actually, the story started before that…

My First Botox Experience

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Migraine by n. mallory

O.K. So because I suffer from chronic migraines and have not found preventative drugs to be effective, my neurologist proposed Botox injections. Apparently, they have had great success using Botox on patients who did not respond well to the preventatives.

Mind you, I’ve always been uneasy around needles (who isn’t?) and I’m not fond of the idea of having something that’s labelled “toxin” injected into my “temple” of a body. :P However, After 34 years of pain and a multitude of futile attempts to lessen it, I was desperate.

So, today was my first treatment.

Resolving To Close The Distance A Little

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family, Anxiety/Depression by n. mallory

I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching over the weekend. Mostly I’ve been thinking about my relationships with family and with the people I consider my friends. My grandmother’s death made me realize a few things about myself, a few things I’d like to change.

I’m not particularly close to my family beyond my parents. It seems to me that when I was younger, probably pre-college, I was closer to all of them. I don’t know if it’s a symptom of my depression that I distanced myself from them but I do seem to distance myself from

A Moment of Silence

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

This morning at 5:30am MST, my grandmother passed away after several days of exhibiting strokelike behavior. I know that she is much happier now that she can be with my step-grandfather. There will probably not be a service.

My Quest of Faith

Posted in My Life, Featured, Faith by n. mallory

My step-grandmother was Buddhist though she never flaunted it in front of my very Protestant family. ;) One night in the hospital while my grandfather laid on his deathbed, the hospital chaplin chatted with my Vietnese step-grandmother about her faith. She told him that she believed that there is one God but that we all have and need different ways to worship him. Outside of her long lost eggroll recipe, this was perhaps the most important thing I could have ever learned from my quirky, sometimes mysterious step-grandmother.

The Guilt of Compassionate Prayer For Death

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

My grandmother is in her mid-eighties and has been on a steady decline in health since the death of my step-grandfather four years ago. I suspect that the decline is at least a bit in part to a conscious or unconscious lack of desire to live without him. I have some resentful thoughts that she allowed herself to fall into this condition by refusing to take care of herself, a condition I suspect she was in before my step-grandfather’s death.

The nursing home she is in sent her to the hospital on Sunday as they were concerned she may have

History Repeating Itself?

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

So, four years ago, the hospital I was at went through lay-offs and an administration change. Our department was then outsourced to another company and I survived all of that and thought I was safe and started looking for a house. Obviously, I was lucky I didn’t go through with buying one since I lost my job and then moved to Maine.

So, at my new job, our department is going through a heirarchy change. We’re getting a newly created position of a CIO and some sort of underling like a VP. After over a year, the
