American Secrets For Dummies - Er - Terrorists

Duffy stressed that “the leaking of classified information is a serious issue.” And he defended the use of wiretaps, warning that “Al-Qaeda’s playbook is not printed on page one, and when America’s is, it has serious ramifications.”[“White House says Justice opted to probe wiretap leak independently” (Yahoo!News)]

“It’s like handing over a map to the terrorists.”
– Comment by friend’s husband regarding this article on The Register’s “Spot the Black Helicopter” competition using Google Earth

I just felt a deja vu when my friend’s husband made the comment because I’d read the article on the warrantless wiretaps. The fact is that we do seem to have everything out there for everyone to see and hear. This is becoming more and more true as each year passes and each new level of technology advances. How do we stop it?

My other thought on the subject of the leaking of the warrantless wiretaps is why an investigation into the leak didn’t happen prior to the story hitting the front pages of the media? I mean, I get that leaking of classified information is criminally wrong. But according to the press, the Bush administration knew about the story a year ago and asked that it be withheld for the time being. If the Bush administration knew then that top secret classified information had been leaked to the press, why did they wait until it was made public to act like the leaking was a big deal? Especially since they were already in the middle of a leak investigation regarding Valerie Plame.

In fact, I would think that Al-Queda would assume that phone calls are being monitored and would take precautions because of that. I mean, they probably try to tap into phone calls and would assume that their enemy would go to just as far to fight them. The fact that we have a secret court to authorize these kind of super secret wiretaps and that’s it’sWag the Dog public that we have this super secret court should pretty much indicate that the world of bad guys probably knows what we’re up to. The fact that Bush and his cronies circumvented the court secretly doesn’t make it any more or less of a threat to terrorists.

There’s just something fishy here. Too much like Wag the Dog.
