The News Is Like A Soap Opera

I haven’t been writing about world events or politics the last week or so. I’m sure you noticed the absence of ranting and raving particularly about the Bush administration around here.

Of course, there are a couple reasons for that.

I’m sure you’ve noticed my current focus on NaNoWriMo. That’s going to take quite a bit of time and energy this month. If you think it’s easy, sign up and write a 50K novel too. ;)

But on a more serious note, I’ve been watching the news and the headlines and skimming my usual blog haunts (though a little less frequently since the beginning of NaNo), but what I’ve realized is that the unfolding news is more like a soap opera than anything else. What I mean is that the media and bloggers alike seem to be painfully dragging out every story, repeating yesterday’s version of it if nothing new has occurred. The headlines on CNN today look pretty much like the headlines from yesterday and to me they have a strong resemblence to headlines from last week.

Not to mention that I’ve come to realize that while a lot of anti-Bush administration folks are celebrating the fall of Libby with parties and booze and song and dance, it’s really nothing to cheer about. An official high in our Presidential administration has been indicted, accused of commiting crimes. This is a sad, serious time for our country. We’re supposed to be role models of democracy and here we are showing our corrupt spots, proving to the world that it doesn’t matter what type of country you are, power is still abusable and corruptable…and everything implied in Libby’s indictment suggests something more sinister and involvement from someone even higher up in the administration.

To me, this sort of dirty laundry is far worse than weather or not a President had a mistress or an affair. To me, this sort of dirty laundry harms our credibility as a nation pushing it’s ideals on other countries.

It’s just so sad and so I haven’t basked in the glory of the indictment and everything it could mean like other liberals. I just can’t.

It’s kind of strange because I thought I’d be happy to be proven right but to be honest, when it’s this kind of right, it’s just disheartening. I think I’d really rather been a conspiracy loon than be proven right about these things.

Hi there. Just popping by since you were kind enough to comment on my blog. I have to apologize for not moderating your comment until this evening; I’ve got WordPress set to moderate any first-time commenters (to reduce comment spam) and I’m still not used to checking for them. (I tend to be a little airheaded about stuff like that. ;) ) Anyway, nice site you’ve got here! Thanks for visiting mine, and keep writing! :D

The Libby issue is even worse because Bush has refused to state that he will not pardon him if convicted, allowing Libby to continue to obstruct justice and perjure during his trial.

Good luck with the novel month.

I’m watching for that whole pardon thing. I think it’s a double-edged sword at this point simply because everyone’s watching. Clinton and Bush Sr. managed to pull off the pardoning of friends and colleages thing while no one was looking, but if Bush does it now, it’ll be seen as an admission of guilt on his part — at least from the Left.
