Discombobulated Nano Thoughts — 10/26/05
- I can’t believe Nano starts next week.
- OMG!
- I wonder what kind of music other people listen to while they write (and in what genre) or if they prefer silence.
- What if I can’t get past the first few pages again this year?
- I really keep hearing this story in first person in my head, but I’ve read somewhere that first person can be boring to the reader.
- Either way, can I really write 50,000 words based on my experiences losing my job and moving to Maine and dealing with the first real Winter?
- Really, how interesting can I make seeing real Fall foliage to other people?
- OMG!

OMG, indeed!
You just have to keep writing. Even if it’s unrelated to the story — find your way back. You’ll make it!
I write mainstream fiction and last year I listened to Tears For Fears: Songs From the Big Chair a LOT. Also Mindy Smith, U2, Patty Griffin, and a few other things. But I mostly played the same four or five CDs over and over again once I had settled on them (which I didn’t plan in advance).
I need to decide whether to plan four or five CDs in advance this year, or just wait and see which ones find their way into my hands again. I’m leaning toward a hefty dose of Willie Nelson, though, for some reason. I may even buy some new ones!
Any recommendations?

- I can’t believe it either!
- My playlists change depending on what I’m writing. As I’m doing sci-fi with a cyberpunkish angle for NaNo, it’ll involve among other things Juno Reactor, some Ghost In The Shell OST, anything that can remind me of the RPG “Cyberpunk” for the ambiance (including the Blade Runner OST), and generally speaking, lots of speedy music. As an overall rule, I can’t write without music, and I tend to prefer OSTs or songs in other languages than French (in my own language, it’s too easy to get distracted by the lyrics… although i’m starting to get the same problem with English, and Japanese to a certain extent).
- First person is boring only if it’s badly written and rendered boring by the writer. Personnally, I don’t care; I’ve read great 1st-person stories and crappy 3rd-person ones, so as long as it works with the tone/setting of the story, anything goes regarding POVs.
- 50k? Me, I’m sure you can. There’s very likely much material to develop in this.

I think it’s about time they did a remake of Blade Runner, or came out with a second version.
