Katrina Cover-Up?
I had a long conversation with a friend who’s lived through the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita disasters and come home to put her life together. She has a different point-of-view than the rest of us who’ve been lapping up the tales told to us by the media. I found it odd because of the two of us, she’s definitely more practical and less likely to suspect conspiracy of any kind.
Her opinion of the New Orleans’ Superintendent’s resignation last week is that he’d been asked to leave as part of a massive government cover-up. She seems to think that the government is now trying to downplay the things that the media reported. She thinks that likely the things the media reported — like all the murders in the Superdome and Convention Center that have since been reported to have been just rumors — probably did happen and now the government is manipulating the evidence.
Interesting theory. I don’t know that I buy the ultimate cover-up, but I suspect she might be right that the government is trying to do some cover-up — this is evident in the government’s attempt to control the information coming out of New Orleans the last few weeks, the attempt to keep people from photographing the dead; after all, if there’s no unofficial documentation of the dead, then they can control the story that’s told, right?
Personally, I don’t know why the Superintendent resigned. I imagine at least in part, he saw enough in that one week than he cared too. That kind of stress can get to you. Just because you’re a soldier, a police officer, a fireman, doesn’t mean you don’t have emotions invested in any situation. They’re not robots. They’re brave, courageous, yes…but they are still human and humans can only take so much tragedy before they need to take a breather.
Still, it’s something to think about.

Perhaps, instead of controlling the media by not allowing them to photograph the dead, they wanted to keep people from seeing thier kin dead on TV. We do not film our war dead either. We do not want pictures of mangled people being seen by thier families. Perhaps the government has sensitivity the media only wants when it is one of their own.
If there is a cover up it is the local government. The feds are not the reason for the problems. There were issues but the federals do not provide police, evacuation or other services, they coordinate those. Local and state officials, the ones who blamed Bush and now are smiling and blinking with their hands out begging for money, are the ones who should be covering up.
Where are all the people who were raped? Where are the bodies with bullet holes? I think it was a made up story that grew legs and caused mass hysteria.
