The New Laptop Cometh

Posted in Geekery, Computer & Gadget Talk by n. mallory | .

As of yesterday morning, FedEx tracking said my new laptop is sitting in Boston, Ma…just 2 hours or so away. I’m all a tingle with excitement. (Well, I would be but for the Katrina depression.)

I’ve discovered that getting a new computer is a bit like getting a new apartment or home or car. I’m full of promises to keep it clean (meaning the file structure and the stupid useless programs) and not screwed up like the last laptop. Mind you that less than 3 years ago, I made that same promise…I’d also made that same promise every time my two desktop computers before laptop-land got reformatted.

This time will I learn from my experience?

The state of my apartment says “probably not”.

Anyway, so far, here’s the software I plan to load on it:

Firefox
Thunderbird
Picasa2
Adobe Photoshop 6
Y!M
PalmPilot HotSync
iTunes

And I guess I’ll go from there. Eventually I’ll have to install Zoo Tycoon and maybe Mall Tycoon since I never beat those. (How do you beat the Big Cat level anyway? It’s impossible.)

I wonder where I can find a good version of backgammon to play.

I’ve been having problems with my bought and paid for FPT32 Pro, so I guess I’m looking for something better.

I’ll also need to connect to my wireless network and hopefully that will allow me to copy the “My Documents” directory from the old laptop and some of the stuff in the “Downloads” directory. (I hope my “My Music” directory copies because otherwise it’s going to annoy the shit out of me to have to re-rip those CDs and to have to copy the bought songs to CDs to rip to the other computer.)

The thing I’m kind of worried about is that I’ve just renewed my McAffee services and paid for new software and I’m hoping that McAffee won’t make me pay for new accounts and software on the new computer…especially since it’s unlikely I’ll be using the old laptop much at all in the future and probably won’t need it.

In know it’s stupid that I can program the heck out of stuff but make me look at software and hardware and I feel like when Mickey tried to explain car engines to me — and to think I was going to be a mechanical engineer…

Anyway, I’m hoping the arrival of the new laptop will help refocus my obsessive nature from the nightmare of Katrina to something less nightmare-triggering.

    I love Firefox.

Congrats! I need a new laptop at some point, but it’s not on the immediate horizon. Have to pay off the credit cards first! Are you giving seminars on that topic now, btw? I know you did a great job with it!

    It’s really quite simple.
    1. Be employed.
    2. If you can get paid for overtime, work as much as you can; if you can get paid for being on-call, take as many other people’s weeks as possbile.
    3. Get a 0% interest for a year card to consolidate your cards, pay the minimum each month and put $500 - the minimum into a savings account (I recommend ING at 3% interest) each month. When the total in the savings account is equal to more than what you owe, pay off the card.

The first step was my inital problem. ;)

I was going to wait on bying a new computer but when my current one started to act like someone on Laugh In, I decided it was necessary.

    4. Pay cash

Why don’t you load all your music into your ipod then after you load itues reverse load it into the new computer. I am not sure but think that should work.
