Friday Five First Sentences — 08/26/05

well, here we are again on a Friday and I’m like “Oh, shit! Gotta do my sentences!”

• One morning she woke up and realized she simply could not eat another bite of the institutionalized powdered scrambled eggs.
• He’d always heard that in the West you could become someone else, anyone else, and he intended to do just that.
• Morrigan’s sense of honor guaranteed her loyalty even when that loyalty was paid for.
• Time travel always gave Daylynn such a migraine.
• Really, everyone thought familiars were nifty until they got an overly chatty one.

   After the fire destroyed Maddie’s home, her neighborhood, her world, she decided she had nothing else to lose and moved to Ireland with nothing but her passport, wearing her least favorite dress, which was not destroyed because, thanks to her dubious luck, she had left it at Milo’s the weekend before.

   Karen bought the gun on Tuesday, telling herself that she could always return it, sell it, or bury it in the backyard if the migraine finally went away.

   I didn’t recognize the car that was parked in my driveway when I got home that day; if I’d known whose it was, I would have kept driving until I ran out of money and then I would have waited tables in a roadside diner in Kansas or Nebraska for the rest of my days.

   “Sophia May, how many times have I told you that you may not eat crayons?”

Chandler held on, and her brother helped her boyfriend spin the spinning wheel around faster, faster, till she thought her brain would burst, as if the high weren’t already high enough, go faster, louder, harder, till time, space, Driver’s Ed, meant nothing but bright white light roaring through her brain, and the playground was cycling up, taking wing, taking flight, now and forever and ever amen and that was when Becca started screaming.

   5. D-Bo cracked open the acorn, and sure enough, there was a condom inside.
