The Government We Deserve

Jazz at Running Scared has written a brilliant piece on losing faith in the government.

People get the government (and by extension, the press) that they deserve. Governments evolve and the press operates in conditions which breed them naturally. A rising tide of fascism (and I mean the real definition of fascism) has bred a generation that has no interest in questioning any actions of the government as long as “their party” is in power. The press has grown soft and willing to look blindly aside under the guise of “not being partisan” so long as they keep their White House press pass rights. When humans are given that kind of power and are no longer questioned or scrutinized… well, the nastiest mold grows in dark, damp places. [“Losing my faith” (Running Scared)]

I have to say that I agree with pretty much everything Jazz said. I remember in the 80’s thinking all of that cloak-and-dagger stuff was noble and exciting. I remember thinking that “those people” were the real heroes, risking there lives so I could go on living in oblivion to the possible danger that lurked around every international corner but mostly in the Evil Empire. Heck, once upon a time, I wanted to work for the NSA or the CIA or even the FBI as an analyst.

However, my own work as a government contractor on a military base left me with enough paranoia to convert me to full-blown conspiracy theorist as the years wore on even long after I’d gone to the “safety” of the private sector. (Heh. Different agendas and games but still agendas and games.)

Anyway, I understand what it’s like to lose faith in a government, no matter which party is in power. I no longer believe that only the non-innocent are watched, arrested, “dealt” with. I don’t believe in the theory that if you have done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. There’s been too many cases to prove that wrong.

And I no longer believe that the government has my best interests at heart.

In fact, I no longer think it has a heart.
