Friday Five First Sentences - 7/29/05
A long time ago, in a city far far away, I had a writing circle where I encouraged the group to write five sentences that could be the first sentences of a story or novel. The intent is to draw readers in, to make them want to know more. The first sentence of short stories and novels and articles should grab the read and make them unable to close the book and toss it away.
So, I’m going to start trying to do this once a week on Fridays from now on to get myself back into the groove of writing. Here are my first Friday Five First Sentences:
- Halloween and Mardi Gras were her favorite times of the year simply because they were the only times she could venture into public as her true self — wings and all.
- Even the supernatural called her the Angel of Death; they were too afraid not to invite her to their social affairs and terrified she’d make an appearance all at once.
- If she could pick one superpower to have, in her heart of hearts, she’d have the ability to cause the heads of moronic managers to explode with a single blue-eyed stare.
- She was so sleepy that one of these seconds she was going to blink only her eyes weren’t going to reopen and what then would the board of directors think as her head slammed into the well-polished mahogany table?
- You always think your self-righteous convictions can withstand any personal experience the world could fling at you…but the world knows better.
