Last night I got to thinking about “what-ifs”.
For example, what if my parents hadn’t moved from New Orleans and what if I hadn’t moved from New Orleans.
The truth is that I would never have left New Orleans if I hadn’t lost my job in December of 2003. I would have stayed in New Orleans and I would have even stayed in the city for the hurricane. Yep. I would have been one of the stupid ones. I admit it. It’s a psychological control issue of mine that I like to know the status of my

Editor & Publisher had an article yesterday asking the question of whether or not the Katrina catastrophe in New Orleans could have been avoided. While I don’t agree that it could have totally been avoided, I do agree that more could have been done to protect the city from the ammount of devestation that was wrought.
The fact is that the current levee and pump system was only built to handle a Cat 3 hurricane. It has long been known that a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane would do catastrophic damage to the city, direct or indirect hit.

Some people would have you believe that all of the soldiers oversees are glad to be there and see the Iraq War as a noble mission. Some people would have you believe that all of the soldiers are personally insulted by war protestors. Some people would have you believe that you cannot support your troops and be against the war in Iraq at the same time.
I don’t believe that’s true. I’m of the opinion that the soldiers in the military have their own minds and their own opinions despite the fact that the military tries to train

Earlier this summer, we received a notice that our heating gas company was offering discounts to employees where I work for the coming year. As of today via company-wide email, those discounts are being discontinued “due to the turbulent nature of the market at present.” It can be no coincidence that this comes one day after Katrina devesated the Gulf Coast, which includes many oil and gas drilling rigs. Since production has been halted for several days and damage is just beginning to be assessed, it’s evident that some of us are in for a long, cold,

Fortunately none of my family lives in New Orleans anymore so it’s just my adopted dysfunctional family (my friends) that I have to worry about. I have now heard from or of most everyone in my old social circle that was still living in the New Orleans area.
El, PW (and English who arrived in town in time to evac), Peter, and Meg have been verified by myself as safe in Memphis — meaning I’ve spoken to them myself. It’s still impossible to contact anyone via a cell phone with a 504 area code though they aren’t

I’m picking out my clothes for my vacation as I desperately try to get in contact with El & PW, who are supposedly safely in Memphis — the hotel reservation is in El’s name and I’d hate to think I’m going to spend my vacation in the hotel lobby guarding my luggage.
Anyway, I’ve pretty much decided that there are just some t-shirts that I probably shouldn’t wear in this post 9-11 age…

Well, I visited the doctor today. I had an appointment to get my Depo shot on Wednesday but the daily headaches had become a 3 day migraine that left me bent over my toilet at 2am last night, so I called and got an appointment with her. Obviously the vicodin no longer works.
The Bad news, of course, is the migraine and nausea. The doctor has given me a prescription for Zomig. We’ll see if that works. It sometimes takes a while to kick in if I remember right. She also gave me something for

The below appeared on a website for a local Nawlins news show on August 1, 2005:
JACKSON BARRACKS — When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.
“The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission,” said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard.
Col. Schneider says the state has enough equipment to get by, and if Louisiana were

Well, it seems like more and more Congressional Republicans have been breaking away from the straight party vote — Maine’s Olympia Snowe comes to mind; she’s repeatedly shown she can make up her own mind no matter how her party if voting.
Anyway, now Iowa Congressman Jim Leach, a member of the House International Relations Committee, is taking things a step further from the party line. He’s co-sponsoring California Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s (D) Resolution of Inquiry into Bush Administration communications with the U.K. about Iraq. So far only Democrats have been involved in requesting an investigation and cosponsoring

For those of you not familiar with the Nawlins terminology, “‘Yat’ is a term for the quintessential neighborhood New Orleanian. It’s derived from the local greeting, “Where y’at!”, although it tends not to be used by locals in the way it’s used by outsiders.” [“A Lexicon of New Orleans
Terminology and Speech”] Though I technically never considered myself a “Yat” while living there, the sentiment is appropriate.
All of those years living in New Orleans and Metairie, I only ever once left town due to a hurricane and that was because my dad made me. I even drove back

I’ve been keeping an eye out for good news articles of any kind as I’ve been very depressed lately about the state of the world and the overwhelming negative news in print and on t.v. I’m happy to report that I’ve found one that certainly is good news to those of us interested in protecting the environment and in helping repair the damage wrought in Iraq.
In the early 90’s, to punish rebellious Iraqis, Saddam Hussein had the marshlands drained to almost nothing by building a network of channels and dykes to redirect the water elsewhere. By 2002, satellite images

Has anyone else noticed that all of the violence in Crawford by protestors has been from people protesting the anti-war protestors?
A few weeks ago Larry Northern used his pickup truck to run over the mini-memorial of crosses to represent fallen soldiers in Iraq. Then Larry Mattlage grew annoyed with the crowds and fired shots into the air on his nearby property.
Now that Crawford is full of protestors protesting the anti-war protestors as well, there’s bound to be even more trouble like yesterday’s incident:
In one heated moment, members of the pro-Bush crowd turned on what they mistakenly thought were
