Why Today?

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Migraine by n. mallory

Well, I’m feeling fairly ill this morning. I’ve got a migraine and I feel nauseated and quite frankly, I can’t decide if it’s the anxiety over flying today or my recent Depo shot or the switch from Prozac to Effexor yesterday that is causing it. Granted, my doctor did warn me that the switch in drugs might make me feel jittery and a little ill for a couple of days, and maybe I should have thought about switching after the trip this weekend.

I was unable to finish my bagel this morning and I don’t even want to think

In The Words of Senator Russ Feingold

Posted in Politics & Causes, The World by n. mallory

From an address in October of 2001 on opposing the U.S. Patriot Act:

…There have been periods in our nation’s history when civil liberties have taken a back seat to what appeared at the time to be the legitimate exigencies of war. Our national consciousness still bears the stain and the scars of those events: The Alien and Sedition Acts, the suspension of habeas corpus during the Civil War, the internment of Japanese-Americans, German-Americans, and Italian-Americans during World War II, the blacklisting of supposed communist sympathizers during the McCarthy era, and the surveillance and harassment of antiwar protesters, including

I’m Unhappy/I’m Happy

Posted in My Life, Discombobulated, Clean Sweep by n. mallory

I’m unhappy that I had to get up this morning.
I’m unhappy that I had to get dressed this morning.
I’m unhappy that I had to come to work this morning.
I’m unhappy that I have lots to do tonight to get ready for my trip this weekend.
I’m unhappy that I’m fat.
I’m unhappy with how I look today.
I’m unhappy that I couldn’t find Diet Vanilla Coke at the store this morning.
I’m unhappy that I’m depressed.
I’m unhappy that I’m lonely.
I’m unhappy that I have no one to go to the movies with.
I’m unhappy that it will probably rain while I’m in D.C. this weekend.
I’m

The Tide Is Changing

According to The Washington Post’s new poll, “for the first time since the war in Iraq began, more than half of the American public believes the fight there has not made the United States safer.”

Other interesting statistics:

Your Guy Won — Get Over It!

Posted in Politics & Causes, Soap Box, The World by n. mallory

Yesterday on a message board, someone who is a blind follower of the Bush administration was spouting about how Kerry’s grades wern’t any better than Bush’s in college. My favorite response was from someone who said, “You’re guy won. Get over it already!”

This is particularly funny to me because whenever anyone criticizes Bush and his administration on this message board, the Bushbots start spouting, “You’re guy lost! Get over it already!”

Really it has nothing to do with John Kerry anymore. The election is way over. We’re more concerned with what’s going on in the here

More Complaining About PSP Tubes

Posted in Geekery, Computer & Gadget Talk by n. mallory

Well, I downloaded a 30-day trial copy of Paint Shop Pro. It’s $99 to buy it and since I only want it to open .psptube files and convert them to .jpg and .png files, I am very reluctant to spend the money. I really think they should make a cheaper software program that is just a viewer/converter. I still think it’s ridiculous to have a image type that doesn’t work on the web or is only viewable in $99 software.

Anyway, I’ve started toying with a fairy design for this blog using work from rendermepink.com which I

Open Access — My Ass!

Posted in My Life, Wellness by n. mallory

O.K. So my doctor’s office has this “open access” program, where you call on the day you want to come in and if your doctor has hours that day, you get to go in and see him or her. They have regular-type appointments too, but they fill up rather fast.

So, last March, I had some major trouble getting in. There was a lot of frustration and added stress because my doctor was going out of town in a few days and would be gone for several weeks but I needed a Depo shot and med check before she

Ah-ha! Tubes Revealed

Posted in Geekery, Computer & Gadget Talk by n. mallory

So I found this website that explains what a Tube is.

Paint Shop Pro by Jasc Software has a fun feature called picture tubes. The tube consists of a variety of images which allows you to “paint” with images rather than color.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a way to view them without paying $75 for Paint Shop Pro and I don’t know how you can convert them to something web-friendly. It’s very frustrating. Why would you create an image that only a limited number of people can look at?

Creative Confusion

Posted in Geekery, Blogging & Other Blogs by n. mallory

Well, now that The Weekend Chef and Nothing Tastes As Good have been successfully converted to WordPress and completely redesigned with my own handiwork (built on a borrowed design, of course), I find myself eyeing The Naked Truth. As cute as I think this crop circle theme is, it’s not my theme and the programmer in me wants something that got my touch to it.

I’ve had a couple of ideas for themes/skins but I’ve run into a few road blocks. Since it’s been years since I’ve been really developing in the web environment, I seem

Is Bush a Sith Lord?

The current episode of Star Wars is dynamite for the duplicitous Bush administration. Palpatine, a Sith Lord masquerading as a galactic Republican, becomes Chancellor of the Galactic Republic through deception. Palpatine uses wars that he instigates to elevate security over the power of the Senate and to become dictator.

In a moment of triumph, Palpatine tells the Senate: “In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society.” The senators respond with sustained cheering and applause. Padme says, “So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous

Which Came First — Portland, ME or Portland, OR?

Posted in Interesting Trivia, Geekery by n. mallory

I was trying to get to the website of The Portland Press Herald of Maine, but somehow ended up on a magic redirect to a website for Portland, OR. I thought this little bit of trivia was interesting and had to share:

Portland started as a spot known as “The Clearing” which was on the Willamette about half-way between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. In 1843, William Overton saw great commercial potential for this land; his only problem was that he lacked the quarter needed to file a land claim. So, he struck a bargain with his partner

Nose Screw Tip

Posted in My Life, Nose Piercing by n. mallory

Here’s my little nose piercing tip of the weekend: Do not play with the new piercing, even if you tell yourself you are just adjusting it to a less annoying positions. Trust me, when a fresh nose piercing comes out and you have to screw it back in yourself, it will be extremely painful and you will panic and it’s not as easy as you think it’ll be.

My nose is still tender from yesterday’s adventure.

By the way, if you see amber nose studs, please leave me a link to the website. I’d love to get one but

Breaking The Software Mold

Posted in Geekery, Computer & Gadget Talk by n. mallory

I have long been stubbornly clinging to IE. I really can’t give you a reason other than compared to Netscape, I just thought it worked better. I never put much thought into other browsers, particularly the free ones. In fact, my opinion of free software has been somewhat snobby in the past — a “you get what you pay for” kind of attitude despite my cheapskate mentality. In many cases, my use of particular software is simply because that was what I’d been using and change was bad. I started using Eudora after a friend

Is The Use Of Email Saving Trees?

Posted in Interesting Trivia, Geekery by n. mallory

I picked up this little “hmmmmm” at Freecycle.org

With the advent of emails, has our copy paper usage has gone up, down or stayed the same?

Answer: It has gone up by 40%!! And it’s increasing a further ten percent a year. So much for the paperless society. The desire to print out all that extra information, coupled with cheap printers at every desk, have led to this overwhelming increase.

Oy. Web Programming Isn’t As Easy As It Looks.

Posted in My Life, Geekery, Blogging & Other Blogs by n. mallory

Well, in the conversion and redesign of The Weekend Chef, I have had more than a few eye-openning, frustrating moments. There are a lot of bad habits I picked up early on in learning HTML which are now seriously frowned upon though when I was learning them, those bad habit were called “work arounds”.

I’m glad I took that CSS class and I’m gladd I found the HTML validation sites. Now I have to start work on the other two blogs.

Oy.

I do wish that the “nifty corners” technique had worked better on The Weekend Chef. They just

Awww…Shucks…I Was Just Doing My Job

Posted in My Life by n. mallory

Apparently our department has something called a “Spot Award” where any employee or manager is invited to nominate individuals, either from IS or from other departments, who have “gone beyond the call of duty” in some way. The typical “award” may be movie tickets, or cafeteria gift cirtificates, or a $25 gift certificate to some local business, restaurant, etc.

Yesterday I was CC’d on the following email (edited to protect everyone’s identities):

Hi [office manager] -

Please draft a Spot Award for [Noah] to read:

[Noah] really came through with the Tamtron results to Logician and made the experience so painless. It

Things To Think About

Posted in Some Fun Now, Discombobulated by n. mallory

Here are a few things to think about that you probably have never thought about:

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

If money doesn’t grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round?

Why do you have to “put your two cents in”.. . but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”? Where’s that
extra penny going to?

Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a
