Who’s Flip-Flopping Now?

Think Progress had an interesting pair of quotes from President G. W. Bush. What a difference being a president and 5 or 6 years makes…

In 1999, George W. Bush criticized President Clinton for not setting a timetable for exiting Kosovo, and yet he refuses to apply the same standard to his war.

George W. Bush, 4/9/99:
“Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the president to explain to us what the exit strategy is.”

And on the specific need for a timetable, here’s what Bush said then and what he says now:

George W. Bush, 6/5/99
“I think it’s also important for

Round ‘n’ Round We Go

Posted in Politics & Causes, In the News, The World by n. mallory

I don’t understand what’s going on in our country right now. I just don’t get how the Religious Right can be campaigning so adamantly about making abortion illegal and keeping gays and lesbians from marrying each other and all the while spouting Bible verses as their reasons; yet there is also a strong movement in this country to have The Ten Commandments removed from public courthouses because of separation of Church and State. If we’re so interested in keeping our Church and State separate, why are legislators trying to pass laws that affect other people’s lives based on

Embracing My Inner-Neat-Freak…Again

Posted in My Life, Clean Sweep by n. mallory

I am taking a four day weekend for the 4th of July. Try not to get too excited. I’ve dedicated it to cleaning house.

With N2 possibly coming in August and my parents coming in September, it’s time to stop being a slob and start getting organized again.

So, I’m going to do the “framework” this weekend.

Friday:

  • straighten the living room
  • clean the kitchen
  • clean the downstairs bathroom
  • sweep and mop the kitchen, bathroom, and foyer
  • vacuum first floor

Saturday:

  • Hair appointment (should take 2-1/2 hours
  • groceries
  • clean upstairs bathroom & hall
  • re-organize upstairs bathroom linen closet
  • laundry, including folding and putting away

Nothing Ever Goes Perfectly

NOSE PIERCING - OneTribe Body Arts Community, forum, email, aftercare, piercing, tattoo pics, classifieds, books

The most common cause of delayed healing is by knocking or tearing the stud and taking the stud in and out before the wound is fully healed. This will lead to a small lump forming around the piercing. These lumps are called granulomas.

The best course of action to heal granulomas is to apply hot compresses to the wound once or twice a day. Soak a clean paper towel under hot tap water, making sure that it’s not so hot that it burns your skin,

Oh, The Irony!

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Anxiety/Depression by n. mallory

I haven’t been shy about my sleep issues. Everyone knows I was an insomniac for ages. Everyone knows I did months of ambien and finally fell into a semi-normal sleep pattern.

So, how ironic is it that my new anti-depression med, Effexor, has a side effect of making people drowsy and it’s working it’s evil magic on me?

I take the med between 7:30 and 8am every morning. Then right around 11am, I start feeling drowsy with heavy eyelids and by 1pm, I’m feeling like if I don’t pay attention, the next time I blink, it will be a

More On The Iraq Death Tolls

Back in February, Susan of Suburban Guerrilla had quite a bit to say on the true number of deaths resulting from the war in Iraq. She has done quite a bit of research on the subject and claims that the pentagon and the Bush Administration are fiddling with the numbers to make them appear lower. She suggests that only American citizens are included in the count, despite a large number of immigrants who were recruited with the promise of a Green Card. She suggests that people who die on missions but not actually in battle are

House restores $100 million to public broadcasting

Posted in Politics & Causes, In the News, The World by n. mallory

Sometimes peer pressure works in our favor. Let’s hope the trend for using peer pressure for good keeps going.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Big Bird and National Public Radio won a reprieve Thursday as the House restored $100 million that had been proposed as a budget cut for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The 284-140 vote demonstrated the enduring political strength of public broadcasting, whose supporters rallied behind popular programs such as “Sesame Street,” “Postcards From Buster” and “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer.”

The Public Broadcasting Service undertook a high-profile campaign to rescind the proposed cut. Lawmakers were flooded with letters and phone

WTF Is Wrong With People?

Posted in My Life, Soap Box by n. mallory

Remember that car accident I was involved in a year ago this month? Remember that stupid lying bastard who sideswiped me and smacked into the backend of the other woman’s car, sending her to the hospital? Remember how he was trying to blame it all on me?

Well, I got a call yesterday afternoon, from my car insurance company. Apparently the guy is now suing me/my insurance for the damages done to his car and the damages done to the car he hit! WTF?

On top of that, the police report is still wrong and my

Where in the world is Bin Laden?

Remember back around fall 2001, when President Bush said that finding Osama Bin Laden was our highest priority? Remember when he said that the U.S. would not tolerate countries that harbored terrorists?

What the fuck happened?

From CNN.com:

CIA Director Porter Goss says he has an “excellent idea” where Osama bin Laden is hiding, but that the al Qaeda chief will not be caught until weak links in the war on terrorism are strengthened…

[TIME] magazine asked Goss when bin Laden would be captured.

“That is a question that goes far deeper than you know,” he said. “In the chain that you need

Save Public Radio & Television

Posted in Politics & Causes, The World by n. mallory

I recieved this today.

Dear Ms. [Mallory]:

You may be aware of the recent actions by the Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives regarding substantial reductions to the existing appropriation to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Created in 1967 through an act of Congress, CPB was established to help sustain public radio and television stations throughout our country. Through its annual Congressional appropriation, CPB distributes 95% of its federal funds to support local public television and radio stations that meet set criteria, provide support for programming, and fund improvements to the public broadcasting system as a whole. The Maine

Is the world really safer?

It’s so discouraging to hear the same story every monring on the radio — “X number of marines/soldiers/Americans dead after car/suicide bombing in Iraq.” It’s the same story every morning, but it’s not really. Every morning, it’s a different bomb and different victims. What a tragedy.

And this is where our American focus seems to be. We are so focused on Iraq and our own trials that we regulate the suffering of other countries to the back pages of the papers and the 20 second blurbs before the weekend weather report. God forbid, our desire for

Are Libraries A Safe-Haven For Terrorists?

According to CNN.com House limits Patriot Act rules on library records!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Advocates of rewriting the USA Patriot Act are claiming momentum after the House, despite a White House veto threat, voted to restrict investigators from using the anti-terrorism law to peek at library records and bookstore sales slips.

Wednesday’s 238-187 vote came as lawmakers ramped up efforts to extend the Patriot Act, which was passed quickly in the emotional aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. When Congress passed the law, it included a sunset provision under which 15 of its provisions are to expire at the

In Memory of Terri Schiavo

Posted in In the News, Soap Box, The World by n. mallory

The results of Terri Schiavo’s autopsy are finally back. Her husband has truly been treated very badly by Terri’s family, the government, and society in general, in my opinion. He has been accused of many things in regards to Terri’s condition prior to her death. Rumors started by Terri’s family suggested he’d abused and poisoned his now late wife both before her colapse and after it. Of course, the fact that he eventually tried to move on with his life and found another woman to love has labeled him an adulterer in the overly religious

Muscle Spasms

Posted in My Life, Wellness by n. mallory

I was hoping that switching from Prozac to Effexor would elliminate the strange muscle spasms that I’ve been having the last few months since we upped the Prozac to 40mg a day. Maybe it’s just too soon since it’s only been a week, but I do find it slightly annoying to be sitting quietly and have a leg or an arm suddenly jerk out and in again. I had my mother check my meds to see what might be causing it but she said none of them should be. Shortly after that, I saw an article about

Did You Hear The One About The Girl Who Was Afraid To Fly?

Posted in My Life by n. mallory

So, here’s how the story goes…

Friday afternoon, slightly after 3pm, KH dropped me off at the airport. I always like to get there early because 90% of the time I have to go through the search process a couple of times just trying to get on the plane. When I got to the check-in counter, the nice lady there informed me that my 5:02pm flight was delayed and would be departing at 5:30pm instead. To me, this was no big deal.

I managed to get through checking my luggage without having to stand there while a total stranger

Same Thing Happened Last Time

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Migraine by n. mallory

My headache is only slightly better but now I have a sore throat and I feel like someone has turned the heat on right above my cubicle. The last time I saw N2, I had a horrible migraine, which in part could have been the stress of being in an unfamiliar area and in charge of driving and in part could have been the stress of meeting her in person for the first time and in part could have been the weather, which as I recall went through phases of being hot, cool, and wet.

I couldn’t finish my tofu
