Mr. President Pageant

Posted in Politics & Causes, Some Fun Now, The World by n. mallory

Also, I’m thinking that maybe in the future we should just decide who’s president based on some sort of pageant we run every four years. The president could be determined based on a variety of competitions including talent, mudslinging, Q&A, and bathing suit. Miss America could be the hostess and we could do a call-in vote like American Idol.

Get Over It Already

Posted in Politics & Causes, Soap Box, The World by n. mallory

I am so over the mistruths, untruths, rumors and mudslinging. I’m over the people (on both sides) who appear to have no real sense of humor and who will believe anything true or not that agrees with what they want to be true. I’m tired of people being nasty and rude to each other just because of a difference of opinion.

Get over it all already; neither candidate is perfect, certainly neither is God, and neither is the devil incarnate.

If you aren’t willing to have an intelligent conversation without spew hatred, negativity, rhetoric, and propoganda, take heed to the old adage

NaNoWriMo

Posted in Writing, NaNoWriMo2005 by n. mallory

So, I signed up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I’ve been meaning to do it for 2 years and kept missing the deadline for the sign up. Best as I can tell at the moment the goal is to write a 50,000-word novel between November 1rst and midnight November 30th. Quality is unimportant apparently which will be hard for me to get over. I think it’ll be good for me as I tend to dwell a lot on research and getting things just right and that is not what all this is about.

Keep Us Safe?

Posted in Politics & Causes, Soap Box, The World by n. mallory

I am often surprised by the people who support Bush because they say he will keep us safe but then defend his destruction of world-wide alliances with powerful countries which were willing to standby and support us after 09/11/01. These are the same people who believe we are over in the Middle East fighting for “our” freedom and to bring freedom and liberty to those theocracies and dictatorships but also claim in another breath that they don’t give a crap what the rest of the world thinks about us. I’m thinking that those people who don’t think we

Contradictions

Posted in Politics & Causes, The World by n. mallory

I’ve been thinking about some odd contradictions in Bush’s position on four subjects. It seems very hypocritical to me.

The Elections

Posted in Politics & Causes, The World by n. mallory

Well, I know this might just flabberghast some people, but I didn’t see the debate on Friday. It’s the first one I’ve missed this election period. I meant to watch it. I had planned to watch it but between not feeling well and trying to learn how to use Photoshop, I just simply forgot until it was over.

However, I’m pretty sure there wasn’t anything said that would have surprised me or made me change my mind.

Also, I am very interested in the Afghanistan elections over the weekend. They seemed to have gone well, better than expected.

A moment of silence please

Actor Christopher Reeve died this weekend of heart failure at 52. Mostly famous for his role as Superman in five similarly named films, he was also a director and an advocate of stem cell research. He never fully recovered after an accident in 1995 which broke his neck, and while in his younger days, I found him to be too much of a pretty boy for me, I thought he was a strong man and a fine actor and certainly it says a lot about his strength that he never gave up after the accident and continued to

Scared Straight

Posted in My Life, Wellness, Migraine by n. mallory

I remember that the first time I really sat down and said, “This is it; I’m going to lose weight!” it really wasn’t about the uncomfortableness of being overweight or the humiliation of having had to go to the “fat lady” store or the horror of seeing myself in photographs.

I had been to the ER in October for a migraine. My blood pressure at that time was 163/90-something. I was put on blood pressure medicine to help my ever-present migraine and yet my blood pressure was not going down. Two months later, I climbed the side of

A Nation Divided

I have for some time been searching for a way to express how I feel about the war in Iraq. I’m tired of being told I’m unpatriotic and Unamerican if I disagree with the war itself. I’m tired of being insulted and being accused of not supporting the troops because I vocally believe exactly what Kerry has said — “Wrong war, wrong time.”

Someone finally put into words what I’ve been trying to convey. It is possible to support our troops while disagreeing with the commander-in-cheif. I think the men and women who choose to serve in

My Cousin

Posted in My Life, Friends & Family by n. mallory

I don’t know if I mentioned it. My much younger cousin was diagnosed with Aneorexia. It has given me a great deal to think about. I myself cannot seem to stop eating and can’t fathom how somone could simply not eat. It’s not a thought I can grasp. Obviously I have some sort of eating issue too. I wonder if I’ve transfered all my OCD and anxiety-type stuff into stuffing myself until my stomach hurts and then allow myself to eat more?

Life Happened

Life has been going on. Obviously.

I’ve been working — got myself a second nice raise and start being on-call this Thursday. I’ve been going to class — spent 10 Wednesdays building a stained-glass display case for my chess set and several Thursdays in a writing class.

I’ve been mostly trying to avoid political discussions because they frustrate me. I absolutely can’t understand people who don’t research the issues and form their own opinions; those people who rely on talk radio and supposed “newsreporters” to feed them their opinions are impossible to talk to. I’d much rather talk

Farewell To Summer

Posted in Writing, Fiction by n. mallory

For some reason the air near the lake always has a different feel to it than then chemical-tainted air at the crowded community pool — cleaner, crisper, more alive, and there is always something special about that first splash into the still, wet mirror of blue sky on a hot Summer day.

Of course, it is always more fun to call it a “swimmin’ hole” and swing on a rope as far out as you can toward the middle of the stillness and pretend you are Tom or Huck in the good ole days after a hot day of pretending to
